Experiential Learning in Early Childhood: A Practical Guide for Teachers

Children remember what they do, not what they hear. Five classroom routines that turn ordinary lessons into experiential learning.

Experiential Learning in Early Childhood: A Practical Guide for Teachers

"Learning through experience" is the most quoted phrase in early childhood education — and the least practised. The gap is not belief; it is routine. Here are five routines any teacher can run this week.

1. Object before explanation

Start every topic with a real thing children can touch: a seed, a coin, a map, a thermometer. Let questions come from handling the object; explanation lands ten times harder when it answers a question the child already asked.

2. The one-question walk

Take the class outside with a single question — "What is alive here?" — and let observations drive the discussion. Ten minutes outdoors with a question beats thirty minutes of slides.

3. Make, then name

Have children build or draw first, then attach vocabulary to what they made. Language sticks to their own creation far better than to a flashcard.

4. The visible project wall

Every ongoing project deserves wall space that grows week by week. Children revisit, explain to parents, and take ownership. The wall also becomes your best enrollment-tour artefact.

5. Reflect in a circle, thirty seconds each

Close activities with a quick circle: "What did you notice? What surprised you?" Reflection converts an activity into learning — without it, experience evaporates.

Frequently asked questions

Does experiential learning cover the curriculum fast enough?

Yes, when routines are tight. You trade a little coverage speed for far higher retention — less re-teaching later.

What if the class is large?

Run stations: small groups rotate through the hands-on activity while others — guided practice. The routine matters more than the group size.

How — I show parents this is real learning?

The project wall and each child’s portfolio. Evidence beats explanation.
